Between Idleness and Work

To prepare for the project «Vom Baden lernen» students from the Department of Design and Art at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts have spent six weeks browsing archival material on the history of the baths and engaging with issues of work and idleness in past and present. Supported by artists, radio producers and historians the students address the topics of thermal water, gender norms, migration stories, and body imagery:

Raisa Kudasheva explores the everyday life of Italians in Baden in the 1950s from the perspective of a child, Ruben Cassiano lets guests of the former Suva spa have their say, and Jamila Rickenbach – inspired by Hermann Hesse – invites to perception-altering exercises in the city's Kurpark. Wanda Lao compares career prospects of young girls in Baden in the 19th century with those of today while Flemming Buol explores the history of thermal water and Mila Jarkovich reflects on the evolution of shame over time at Bad zum Raben.

Bachelor's students in Art & Education, Data Design & Art, Digital Ideation, Camera Arts, and Illustration Fiction & Nonfiction.

As part of the university collaborations students from different disciplines will venture into “hot topics”. They are challenged to interpret, connect and contextualize the complex natural, social and historical interconnections on site. After an extensive research phase, their audio-visual works will be made available for a larger audience to explore.
